In the first episode of the GATP Solutions Podcast, Nikhar Mathur shares a business lesson that came at the cost of six months of work: solving the wrong problem extremely well.
While working with a major client preparing for an audit, everything appeared to be going perfectly. The CFO was happy, the auditors were satisfied, and every requirement was being addressed. But when the founder returned, he was deeply unhappy with the work.
The reason? The audit was never the real objective.
The founder was preparing to acquire another business, and the audit was simply a vehicle to demonstrate strong financials and secure financing. The team had focused on completing the task without understanding the larger outcome the client was trying to achieve.
That experience changed how Nikhar thinks about leadership, communication, client relationships, and building teams.
In this episode, Nikhar shares four key lessons from the experience:
• Why founders need to focus on outcomes rather than simply completing tasks
• How pressure reveals the strength of your systems, culture, and people
• Why understanding the “why” should come before figuring out the “how”
• Why communication isn't something that happens after the work, it is part of the work
If you're a founder, entrepreneur, or business leader, this episode is a reminder that great execution means little if you're solving the wrong problem.
The next time your team asks, “How should we do this?”, start by asking: “Why are we doing this?”
