Head Cold

The Tuskegee Experiment & Eunice Rivers Laurie

Listen Later

The Tuskegee Experiment was a study on untreated syphilis in black men in rural Macon county, Alabama. Running from 1932 to 1972, the doctors who ran this study wanted to know how syphilis, an infectious disease, progressed differently in black people than in white people. The United States Public Health Service employed Nurse Eunice Rivers knew Macon county and its black communities well. We will see how the Tuskegee study was more racially complicated than it’s often portrayed and how it rattled the public trust in healthcare institutions to this day.Email:  [email protected] & IG @headcoldpodPatreon: www.patreon.com/headcoldpodSources: Tuskegee Population - US Censuswww.census.gov/quickfacts/tuskegeecityalabamaDaniel James Jr. Astor, Gerald The Right to Fight: A History of African Americans in The Military, 1998, De Capo Press, pp. 440–443 Macon Countyce.naco.org/?county_info=01087www.census.gov/quickfacts/maconcountyalabamadatausa.io/profile/geo/macon-county-al#economyBlack Beltmississippiencyclopedia.org/entries/black-belt-prairie/Etowah County Detention Centerwww.tuscaloosanews.com/news/20191124/60-days-in-films-at-etowah-county-detention-centerSyphiliswww.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/syphilis/symptoms-causes/syc-20351756#:~:text=The%20cause%20of%20syphilis%20is,your%20skin%20or%20mucous%20membranes.Macnab RM (2003).
