Publisher's Summary:
Children are often taught that government protects our life, liberty, and property, but could it be true that some laws actually allow people to hurt us and take are things? Join Ethan and Emily Tuttle as they learn about property, pirates, and plunder. With the help of their neighbor Fred, the twins will need to figure out what they can do to stop the bad guys in the government. Frédéric Bastiat (1801-1850) was a French political economist and classical liberal who wrote The Law, upon which this book is based. Through engaging dialogue, young listeners will be led to understand the principles of liberty and the proper role of government.

Start 'Em Off Young!
The concept is brilliantâtake some of the best libertarian philosophy and put it in a package that kids will appreciate. And it works: they love it. Even my nearly-three-year-old finds this book compelling. We had to read it to him four times one day! Admittedly, he's a bit precocious, but I think most kids will get in to it.
I would've taken a different approach with the story to make them more narrative (if that's possible), but they do a good job with this format as it is and I'll be getting more for my kids' philosophical health more than anything else.
Not what I expected.
I bought this whole series from a link I found on FaceBook and I was pretty excited about them based on the cute video of the author's twins explaining freedom and liberty on their ad. I home school our kids and thought they would be fun to read and learn from. I got them and sat down with our kids to read them aloud for a nighttime, educational, peaceful time together. I read this one first, and it was okay. The kids were engaged, but there was a definite heavier feeling than I was expecting. I cringed quietly as I read to them. It was more about corruption of government and left us with an uncomfortable experience. I'm aware that the government is corrupt and I actually believe most of what the books explain, but I don't like how these books have an air of innocence cloaking an ulterior motive. I would've preferred, and I thought that I had bought, books about actual liberty, the righteous efforts of our forefathers, our continued need to foster our liberty by living righteous, honest lives. The books instead harbor contempt and create a feeling of discontent and fear. We got a set of six books, and I've read two. The Creature from Jekyll Island was about money, inflation, and how the federal reserve makes prices go up or down, he's the "creature". Bottom line, I didn't know these books would be of a political nature, a movement of some sort, and I'm requesting a refund for them from the company. They just weren't what I expected.
A wonderful book....
This is a wonderful book is a childrenâs version of Frédéric Bastiatâs 1950 essay, The Law. The book clarifies the proper role of government in human society by using an interesting narrative and excellent illustrations.
Some people seem to miss the point. The author does not sugar coat anything in the book and is not politically correct.
