The Two-fold Cup of Christ

Listen Later

The profound theological truth of Christ's substitutionary atonement is illustrated through the metaphor of the 'cup'—a symbol of God's wrath poured upon Jesus for humanity's sins. Scripture, including John 18, Isaiah 53, and Jeremiah 25, emphasizes that Christ willingly drank the cup of divine judgment in our place, enduring not only physical death but the full weight of God's righteous wrath for our transgressions. This act of sacrifice, though rejected by Peter and misunderstood by the disciples, was the Father's will and the very means by which salvation was secured. There is paradoxical unity of this cup: while it was a cup of wrath for Christ, it becomes a cup of salvation for believers, as His death on the cross provides forgiveness, joy, and eternal life. The Lord's Supper, therefore, is a sacred remembrance of both Christ's suffering and our redemption, where the same act that bore divine judgment now brings eternal blessing and communion with God.
