The Two Ways

The Two Ways - He hears us

Pastor Kile Baker - September 17th, 2023

Four big questions about prayer

Why do you pray?

Who do you pray to?

How should you pray?

What should you pray for?

Why do you pray?

One of the biggest reasons we pray is to ask someone who can accomplish something beyond our own ability

Who do you pray to?

When we pray to a “business partner,” we focus on the exchange.

When we pray to a “family member,” we focus on the relationship.

How should you pray?

What should you pray for?

The Psalms are a collection of prayers that teach us to praise God in all circumstances, more than petitioning Him to improve ours.

Psalm 1 - The Two Ways

How happy is the one who does not

walk in the advice of the wicked

or stand in the pathway with sinners

or sit in the company of mockers!

Instead, his delight is in the Lord’s instruction,

and he meditates on it day and night.

Before we start praying for God’s intervention, we should be living according to His instruction.

Living according to God’s instruction helps us avoid most of life’s troubles, heartache, and tragedies.

He is like a tree planted beside flowing streams

that bears its fruit in its season,

and its leaf does not wither.

Whatever he does prospers.

The wicked are not like this;

instead, they are like chaff that the wind blows away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand up in the judgment,

nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,

but the way of the wicked leads to ruin.

1 Peter 3:10-12

For the one who wants to love life and to see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit, and let him turn away from evil and do what is good. Let him seek peace and pursue it, because the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those who do what is evil.

James 4:2-3

You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and don’t receive because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures.

James 5:16

Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is very powerful in its effect.

Next Steps:

Picture what’s at the end of the way you’re going.

Read, meditate on, and pray Psalm 1 back to God.

This Week’s Prayer:

God help me know and follow your ways. Help me think about and pray to you day and night. Enable me to bring life, joy, and peace everywhere I go. Strengthen me to leave wicked ways and wicked people behind to seek you above all else. Watch over me and walk beside me.
