The Ultimate Hindrance of Revival

by Joel Norris

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. – 2 Chronicles 7:12-14

Revival is a journey that starts with desperation and revolves around humility. The revival formula laid out in 2 Chronicles 7:14 starts with this exact principle: "If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves..."

It makes you wonder, why does God require humility for a spiritual awakening?

Pride is the root of so many problems, starting with the original sin in Genesis. It creates distance between us and God because we feel like we have everything under control and don't need His help. But when we truly see God for who He is, we see ourselves for who we really are.

Isaiah 6 shows us this beautifully. When Isaiah saw the Lord "high and lifted up" in all His glory, his immediate response was "Woe is me, for I am undone." This is the essence of humility—recognizing our brokenness and our desperate need for a Savior.

Jesus Christ is the ultimate example of this. As a lamb led to the slaughter, He showed us what true humility looks like. If pride distances us from God, humility is the path that brings us back. It’s a heart that says, “Lord, I am broken and desperate, and I need you to step in.”

There’s a real danger in pride, especially when it comes to revival. If we could somehow take credit for a spiritual awakening, we would.

But humility forces us to lay all our claims and ownership aside and give God all the glory and praise. It ensures that any spiritual success is His alone.

So, how do we diagnose pride in our own lives? Start by looking at your relationships. If there’s tension or contention, there’s a good chance pride is at play.

Be the first to run to humility. If you feel distance from God, run to humility. Ask God to show you who He is and His glory, and in doing so, you will see yourself with a surrendered heart.
