Publisher's Summary:
Desperate to escape the Eastern front, Peter Faber, an ordinary German soldier, marries Katharina Spinell, a woman he has never met; it is a marriage of convenience that promises 'honeymoon' leave for him and a pension for her should he die on the front. With 10 days' leave secured, Peter visits his new wife in Berlin; both are surprised by the attraction that develops between them.
When Peter returns to the horror of the front, it is only the dream of Katharina that sustains him as he approaches Stalingrad. Back in Berlin, Katharina, goaded on by her desperate and delusional parents, ruthlessly works her way into the Nazi party hierarchy, wedding herself, her young husband, and their unborn child to the regime. But when the tide of war turns and Berlin falls, Peter and Katharina, ordinary people stained with their small share of an extraordinary guilt, find their simple dream of family increasingly hard to hold on to....

This unusual novel is gripping and ...... Love , loyalty, betrayal, despair and personal histories of how people create their own happiness & misery are so empathically told that some of the horrific behavior of people in war can be understood. Caught up in the propaganda of the Nazi Party, ordinary people are persuaded to compromise their own families, friends, beliefs and values until they blind themselves to the facts. The German people are not special in this regard, the American South persuaded itself that racial exploitation and injustice were not damaging to all, the Chinese revolutionaries and others Marxist followers destroyed everything to create an idealized paradise that could not exist. Religions preach their own specialness and permit the murder and ruin of non believers.
We all think we would resist ideologies that seem criminal and murderous, but these characters illustrate that powerful persuasion of being special.
Great story, I kept on reading and great ending
Oh I lost some sleep reading this book and it was hard to read. Great story, I kept on reading and great ending. As a child a man lived on our street and he kept to himself. I can remember my dad telling me that he was in the Russian army during the war, he was captured, he had a choice go to a camp or join the Germany army. He joined the German army, when he could he managed to get away and somehow convince the Americans that he was not a member of the German army by choice. RIP Nick you did well to survive and you were a lovely kind man.
One of the best books I've ever read
One of the best books I've ever read. WWII through the eyes of the Germans. She signs up to marry a member of the military so she will get the pension if he dies. He sings up so he can get some leave. They marry and she moves up with her family because of ties to a person close to Hitler, he goes off to the Eastern front to fight the Russians. He, along with the rest of the German army, doesn't fair too well and the book almost reads like non-fiction it is so realistic. Easy read and very engrossing.

The story revolves around a marriage of convenience when as German soldier takes a wife he has not met in order to gain a few day's leave from horrors of the front.. For a start the relationship works well enough until the soldier returns to the war, this time in Russia.
