Episode 72 of The Unearthed Man Podcast with Bill Heinrich is live.

Success isn't always what it seems from the outside. Bill speaks from experience; he found success very young. Tim had his first transcendent meditation experience at the age of 13. Since then, he’s been a disciple under the greatest Buddhist masters of our time. As a 25+ martial arts teacher and practitioner, Tim brings the value of embodied teachings and philosophies of the East + his direct experiences through meditation into his coaching and vision for impacting the world. 

As a serial entrepreneur, Tim aspires to bring his practical business experience and spiritual and contemplative background to help shift the world into the most inspirational and connected world possible.

In this week’s episode, Tim opens up about his relationship with meditation and the challenges he faced feeling disconnected from family and friends after his transcendent meditation experience at 13. Similar to previous conversations, Tim acted as a chameleon to try to fit in, given that he felt dismissed and unseen post his experience.

We also discussed the value and beauty of ancient language and its ability to describe feelings, emotions and situations in straightforward words. Sadly, English lacks this depth and is more logical and scientific-based.

I enjoyed discussing the journey we are both on and the similarities between us seeking a flow state and living with presence.

In this week’s episode, Zach discussed his pathway from being an Engineering student aligning with the systemic view of the world to become a heart-led Yoga and Meditation student, practitioner and teacher. We discussed the gaps he sees in men with their unwillingness to be vulnerable, to remove the armour and lead from the heart.

We had a great conversation concerning the historical myths of the roles men have played over history and how we need to be careful of the overall historical narrative. This was a very peaceful and calming discussion far removed from most of the previous episodes.

In this week’s episode, Chad openly discussed the challenges he faced growing up as a gay man in an environment opposed to homosexuality. His parents were both farmers and active members of a Baptist church. The worst thing in their eyes was to have a gay son.

Chad had to act as a chameleon to ensure he blended in, which was exhausting. His connection with his family diminished after coming out (and we discuss this terminology) around age 22. Chad was extremely open about his life growing up, the shame and guilt he carried and how that has shaped the person he is today. He is now doing fantastic work in supporting other gay men go through their “second coming out”.

Ken is a writer, podcast creator & host, lyricist, and photographer. A well-travelled and seasoned Midwestern kid. Beginning his third act in this life for himself and in that others. He traded in his suit for a van, a mic and some questions. 

Ken is roughly 12 months into this journey, giving him much more than he imagined. 200 guests walking throw the most intimate questions about their views on life has been amazing. 

This alone is powerful, all the small stories of human tragedy, overcoming life and finding our way as humans. Let alone his story of risking everything he has saved and built to chase his dreams. 

He had a great run as an insurance executive in Asia, with so many great experiences to draw from. 

In this week’s episode, we discussed Ken’s journey from moving from an Insurance executive to creating his initiative, the Jar project. This is all based on him finding interesting humans and asking them to draw from a jar, one of 444 questions. The question then becomes the premise for his Podcast.

We also discussed the personal contract he took out for himself in relation to learning how to play the guitar, the story of how he chose the guitar and how this led to the writing of a song, a book and eventually the Jar project. Ken is a highly energetic, purpose-driven man who has found a new lease on life.

After a sudden cardiac arrest in 2008 from a rare heart condition, Jai underwent a series of heart surgeries and a long road to physical and mental recovery. 

From that experience, Jai knew he wanted to help people with illness prevention so they didn't have to go through what he went through. It urged him to leave his I.T. career to study to become a life coach and personal trainer and start a fitness/mindset coaching business. 

SQ1 Fitness (meaning Square One fitness) refers to taking everything back to "square one" and rebuilding a healthy mindset and habits from the ground up.

Jai’s experiences over the last 15 years have been life-changing; being able to help thousands of people through his struggles and his gym and coaching have also made him a better, more confident and successful person that he can bring to the world and share with others to inspire them.

In this week’s episode, Jai describes the event that nearly took his life and opened up about his out-of-body experience over 3 minutes when he was clinically dead. This experience catalysed him to change his life and the lives of hundreds of others.

He also discussed his earlier years being consumed by partying, alcohol and drugs, which contributed to his cardiac arrest. He now has a solid daily routine he follows seven days per week with a 4.50 am commencement. This episode has excellent insights on choosing from an unhealthy lifestyle to a healthy one. Just remember, you learned how to live unhealthily in the first place so that you can change all that.

I had the honour of being asked to come on board as part of the support crew for the Amend Movement, which held a Men's workshop in Melbourne.

The night before the event, a few of us took the opportunity to share a meal and stay the night together. We took this opportunity to record an impromptu Podcast episode.

The focus of the conversation was the importance of men being willing to heal from their childhood traumas. All six men who sat around the table to have this conversation have spent time working on themselves and have had to overcome several traumas in their past.

This was a super fun conversation and showed the power of men willing to support and be supported by men as they work through challenges they have faced.

Lowell Hunter AKA Salty One is a saltwater man. He creates sand art and uses drone photography to capture the scale of his works within breathtaking landscapes. It all started as a way to get out on the beach and connect with culture, Country and sea.

Lowell is a Nyul Nyul man from the Kimberleys in Western Australia; he Grew up on Gunditjmara Country in Warrnambool and now lives on Waddawurrung Country, Geelong. Each place has kept him connected to the ocean. 

He creates sand artwork using just his feet. Lowell carves stories into the sand using the same foot movements he was taught through dance, movements his people have practised for countless generations. 

The artworks tell stories of family, identity and connection. Lowell was taught his dances from age 10 and has performed in South Africa, China and New Zealand.

Today he passes this knowledge on to young Aboriginal men through Wan-Yaari, a company he co-founded to deliver mentoring, cultural programs cross-cultural training. 

Since starting 2.5 years ago, Lowell has grown in popularity and demand with his unique art and storytelling style. Lowell has been commissioned for many significant projects, including a Visit Vic tourism campaign for the Great Ocean Road and Shepparton White Night projection festival, and now working with the GPT group to develop culturally creative and immersive spaces for their Space Co. shared office spaces across Australia.  

He has also been featured in several group art exhibitions over the past 2 years and is about to open his own Art Gallery in Geelong on Waddawurrung Country.

Lowell was also awarded the 2022 National NAIDOC Creative Talent Award in July this year. This significantly recognises his hard work, dedication and passion for his art and culture.

In this week’s episode, we covered a multitude of things from growing up in Broome (Nyul Nyul Country), relocating to Victoria when he was 7, integration into local communities, starting as an apprentice plasterer, working his way to becoming an award-winning artist and the personal challenges he has faced with alcohol (2162 days free at the time of recording), the death of his Mum and a near-death experience with his brother.

Mike is an author and host of the podcast Project Mindfully Outdoors. He is also an avid sportsman. Who finds his soloist within the wilderness. Whether he finds himself in the deer works or a river bank, the connection with Mother Nature is his driving force behind the adventure. 

Following a failed suicide attempt and many months of homelessness in the wake of significant life-changing events, Mike began a journey of self-discovery, during which he began confronting the obstacles within his mental health. This path led Mike to take up the cause of ending the silent suffering that comes with depression and anxiety. 

Through his work, Mike has self-published many articles relating to mental health and self-growth through the outdoors. In 2021 he started the Project Mindfully Outdoors podcast. A show that documents his journey and how he taps into the unique skill set he had developed during his life to enable him to begin to work through the depression and anxiety struggles that had plagued his life. 

In this week’s episode, Mike discusses the bottom point that had him living homeless out of his truck with a feeling of being unworthy. He talks about his “failed” suicide attempt and the path that led him back to having a successful career and an even more successful Podcast.

We had a great open chat about hunting and the ability to undertake this activity in a conscious, spiritual manner that honours the animals that have given up their lives for human consumption. This included an extraordinary story about a young deer buck that Mike chose not to shoot, given it was just seeking a female deer for mating.
