It was the third week of January, the coldest night of the year so far, and I was stuck at the Pine Crest Motel off Route 17 outside a town called Millbrook. The heater rattled, the parking lot was empty except for my car and a single rusted pickup, and the Wi-Fi was so slow I couldn't even load a map. But the motel had an old DVD player in the room, and in the nightstand drawer, someone had left a single unmarked disc. No label. No case. Just the disc in a paper sleeve. I should have left it there. I should have turned off the light and tried to sleep. Instead, I put it in the player, pressed play, and spent the next forty minutes watching something I was never meant to see. Something filmed in this very room, in this very bed, by someone who was still here.
