Few things are needed today more than peacemakers, people who actively seek to make peace with others. Peacemaking, however, is a very difficult task, because a peacemaker must have a unique combination of strength and humility. Like in v. 8, they must be “pure in heart” or have an undivided allegiance to God, which cannot be compromised. But as Paul says to the conflict-ridden Corinthians, peacemakers also cannot insist upon their own way or on their own rights. This combination requires a difficult and thorough self-scrutiny about the things we can and cannot compromise on. We may be surprised to find how many things are important to us but are not all that important to God or vice versa.
