A car passed by the curtain to my daughters room and I saw what was dancing on the screen, my muscles cramped up and I reached for the phone by my bedside, immediately calling the babysitter. She was dishevelled, almost emaciated and looked nearly completely naked save for a white ragged cloth covering her chest and hips. Her skin was ripped and wounds were openly bleeding down her body, some were oozing black blood while others seeped as if they were pustules. Her face was almost completely obscured by thick matted hair that ran down her face and covered all but her mouth, her head jerked in an upwards fashion.

There are novelty dolls which I sell regularly, which have no power, but allows the purchaser a means of venting, a way to stab out their frustrations without hurting anyone, including themselves. Then there are the real dolls, the dolls that do cause harm. The dolls that are connected with real victims. It is a craft said to be fabricated by the Serpent himself, brought out of the Garden and steeped in a tradition of absurdity. Dancing in circles, building bonfires in groves, singing to goats, smoking, eating and drinking horrendous concoctions, and many more rituals men dream of when trying to empower themselves against another human being, but behind it all is one simple ingredient: hate.

But, one morning, the darkness was there. There’d been a sudden inflammation that worsened my condition, causing irreversible damage. There were no more treatments left to try, no more suggestions. I was stuck in the dark, but at least I was prepared. Still scared the shit out of me, and I barely kept it together as I realized I hadn’t practiced dialing 911 with my eyes closed.

As soon as the dream started, he knew it wasn’t going to be good. He was in what appeared to be an abandoned village. There was blood everywhere, as though the huts were made of blood colored materials. The well in the middle of the village had a bucket hanging from a rope, and it was also filled with blood. Bruce sensed there was life here, but he couldn’t see anyone anywhere. The sun was setting in his dream, and there were no lights anywhere, even though there were torches near the well.

I don’t know if it was the wind that woke me that night, or the mysterious piping music that sounds when the walls between worlds wear thin.  I was nine years old.  I jerked awake, drenched in sweat, at three in the morning on an October school night.  Some silent siren’s song drew me out of bed and to my bedroom window.  Past my suburban backyard, I could see the serrated darkness of the Hudson River as it ambled, lazily, towards the Atlantic Ocean.  I’d spent many lazy days watching boats as they made their way up and down the river, a little perk of my Hudson Valley childhood.  My dad taught me all the different types - the container ships and barges and pusher tugs, the yachts and the passenger vessels.
But I’d never seen anything like the ship passing by that night, gliding leisurely south.

Instead, he wore a grim, almost nervous look, the kind my schizophrenic roommate sometimes had back in college when he thought he saw shadow people in the doorway. “You be careful out there, alright? It’s not your job to be a cop, or a hero, just keep an eye out for the things we talked about; fires where they shouldn’t be, smoke in the restricted zone, or headlights in the access roads up to Smoke Point. You’re the last tower we have this far north, so there’s no room for error.”
