At last count there are roughly 200 serotypes of rhinoviruses – or more plainly put 200 variants of the common cold. Over the years we have all had colds and have become immune to those specific serotypes. As a result, fewer of the 200 serotypes are new to us immunologically and shared antigens make us partially immune to other serotypes. This is why kids almost always get colds, but grandma and grandpa don’t. Jack Russo asks Dr. Leonard Hayflick how likely it is that omicron can reduce the pandemic to an epidemic and quite possibly bring about herd immunity and a more normal lifestyle.
