Season 3 Episode 5 : The Reckoning 

Caroline is determined to have a normal start to the school year, and she enlists Elena, Bonnie, Matt and Tyler to help with Senior Prank Night. However, when uninvited guests arrive, it does not take long for the evening to take a shocking turn. Damon convinces Jeremy to use his connection to the other side to find a way to defeat Klaus. Klaus strengthens his hold on Stefan.

Season 3 Episode 6 : Smells Like Teen Spirit

As the first day of their senior year at high school begins, Elena, Caroline, Bonnie and Matt are still reeling from recent events. However, Tyler seems to be enjoying everything a little too much, and Caroline is unimpressed by his attitude. Everyone is surprised by the arrival of a new student in Alaric's history class, and Damon finds himself increasingly annoyed by a new guest at the Salvatore house.

Katherine fell in love with Stefan when she met him in Mystic Falls in 1864. Although she was also seeing Damon, she had a clear preference for Stefan. She secretly watched over him while running from Klaus. Katherine was unwilling to put her love for Stefan above her own survival and when she returned, they became enemies, as Katherine wanted to deliver Elena to Klaus in exchange for her freedom and Stefan was in a relationship with her at the time.

Dead Man on Campus marked the formation of a positive relationship between Katherine and Stefan. Katherine helped Stefan deal with his traumatism from being locked away and repeatedly drowned to death by Silas for three months, and then he saved her from killing herself by catching her as she was about to hit the ground after jumping from the top of a clocktower. In The Cell, Stefan was still watching on Katherine so she did not commit suicide.Later, the two of them are locked together in a cell by Caroline as part of an experiment to try and help Stefan deal with his traumatism from being locked away. Katherine managed to make Stefan overcome the traumatism by telling him that the real problem wasn't how he felt about being trapped, but rather the pain he felt from Elena leaving him and being with his brother Damon. They almost kissed but before they can Caroline opened up the safe, worried because they had gone silent. Later, when Caroline wasn't watching them anymore, they kissed each other that progressed into sleeping together.

Stefan decides that he wants Tara, a young doctor, to be Cade's next meal. In his plot to find the darkness within her, he knocks up Damon on vervain and keeps him on bed rest in the hospital. Stefan learns that Tara's parents were killed by a drunk driver and compels her into believing that Damon was the driver in an attempt to convince her to kill Damon. She eventually gives into her darkness so Stefan takes her to be fed on by Cade. In Mystic Falls, Caroline's job sends her to her old high school where she discovers Sybil has used her siren ability to get herself a job as a teacher. Sybil uses her powers to make the class tie themselves to trees with one remaining student to set them ablaze unless Caroline retrieves an old bell for her for a mysterious reason. Matt is annoyed with his father for having abandon him and even more so when he discovers that he is the one that got rid of the bell by throwing it in the lake under Wickery Bridge, which is revealed to be because Matt's family actually founded the town and made the bell, but it was taken over by the founding family. It is then revealed that the bell was discovered in 2009, after Elena's parents' car went into the lake and is now in Caroline's garage; Caroline and Sybil go to retrieve it but Seline had taken it, leaving a note for Sybil to taunt her. Damon can't seem to rid himself of Elena's necklace, even going after it after throwing it out the car window, showing that he has enough humanity to care about Elena. Sybil also creates doubt inside of Caroline about Stefan coming back from his ripper phase when his contract with Cade is up and even if he does, he could become a ripper again at any time.
