In chapter 3, James helped us understand the tongue’s important role as a mirror of the heart. From 3:13-4:10, he’s been teaching us how to overcome our flesh and pursue Christlikeness. As we repent of sin and draw near to God we become more like Christ. Having learned the mechanics of growth, James now returns to address our speech with a final, powerful reminder. This Sunday, James returns to the theme of righteous speech. Having spent the last chapter teaching us how to grow in Christ, he now returns to the idea of Christlike speech and applies those principles to our speech.
