All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” Matthew 1:22-23 (NIV)

The virgin birth is one of the most powerful miracles/signs given to solidify the Messiahship of Jesus. But how did the earliest Christians understand the virgin birth? Well in Matthew's framework, it can be explained by an enigmatic prophecy found in Isaiah 7:14.
