Welcome to the first of what will be monthly audio explorations into the history, happenings and colorful characters that comprise the story of Los Feliz. Longtime podcaster Phil Leirness, along with his trusty announcer Marc Hershon and his brilliant musical director Jon Lawlor, will take you on a journey to Travel Town, Friendship Auditorium, Fern Dell, and the Rite Aid parking lot in search of hidden gems and hidden treasure …
Marian Dodge of Friends of Griffith Park will reveal the magnificence of Fern Dell, and explain the efforts going into a plan for its restoration and re-imagining.
Historic audio dating back to the late 60s and a wedding toast from “The X-Files” star Dean Haglund will illuminate some of the 99 year-old Los Angeles Breakfast Club’s remarkable local presence. The longest tenured president in the Breakfast Club’s history (and Phil’s wife), Lily Holleman (aka Lily Leirness) will share her thoughts about the one and only Democracy of Ham an’ Eggs and will celebrate Los Feliz’s standing as a major hub of live comedy.
Finally, another Breakfast Clubber, June Aoichi Berk, longtime active participant of the Japanese American National Museum and Legacy Project Director at Tuna Canyon Detention Center Coalition, will discuss her personal memories of Griffith Park’s Travel Town, and the role it played in the illegal detainment and incarceration of U.S. Citizens during World War II.
