Lesson Text
25Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. 27And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, 28he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, 29"Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; 30for my eyes have seen your salvation 31that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel."
Simeon's story reminds us that:
The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.
2) God keeps His PROMISES and will get us WHERE He needs us to be WHEN we need to be there.
11For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Simeon rejoiced in the temple because when he saw Jesus he saw the "Consolation of Israel."
Consolation is the translation of the Greek word paraklesis, which means COMFORT and ENCOURAGEMENT.
Jesus is the COMFORTER of the world!
"For the time is coming," says the Lord, "when I will raise up a righteous descendant from King David's line. He will be a King who rules with wisdom. He will do what is just and right throughout the land. 6And this will be his name: 'The Lord Is Our Righteousness.' In that day Judah will be saved, and Israel will live in safety.
Christmas is the celebration of the birth of King Jesus, who's kingdom of JUSTICE and PEACE has come and is COMING.
Jesus is the reason we have hope for the future and joy in the present.
6For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
