Apple's famous walled garden is seeing some unprecedented cracks, but only if you happen to live in the European Union. In the upcoming iOS 26.5 update, Apple is finally sharing some of its most magical secrets with the competition to comply with the Digital Markets Act. That iconic proximity pairing animation that makes connecting AirPods feel like a dream will soon work with third-party headphones. No more digging through Bluetooth settings just because you didn't buy the ones with the Apple logo; now, bringing any compatible pair near your iPhone will trigger that seamless connection we have all come to love. The generosity continues with smartwatches from brands like Samsung and Garmin. These third-party wearables are getting a major upgrade in how they handle notifications and Live Activities. You will soon be able to track your food delivery or sports scores right from a non-Apple watch with the same depth and responsiveness previously reserved for the Apple Watch. There is a catch, though: Apple is enforcing a one-device-at-a-time rule for notifications. If you want your alerts on a third-party watch, your Apple Watch will have to take a backseat. It is Apple's subtle way of reminding you who the favorite child really is. While developers are already testing these features, the full rollout across Europe is expected to hit its stride by 2026. Unfortunately for the rest of the world, these open-door policies are strictly limited by geography. Unless other countries follow the EU's lead, most of us will still be stuck with the traditional, clunky pairing process for anything non-Apple.
