Consumer culture a form of resistance

How can we funnel our consumer tendencies into our work if we can’t avoid it entirely? Are artist dates a form of this?
Criticism
This is so prevalent in the arts and our culture in general. “Individuals who are realized in their own lives almost never criticize others.” Do you think this is true?
