Ezekiel 33:7-9 9/10/2023
The Gospel reading is Matthew 18:1-20.
Ezekiel is supposed to proclaim a warning: God’s judgment of sin is real. God continues to call “Watchmen” to proclaim the Law and Gospel to us and through us. This sermon wants to remember the purpose of the Law in this process. We have all too often jumped to the Gospel which then becomes no good news. Today, we sing “The Law of God Is Good and Wise” (LSB 579). How is this most certainly true?
For reasons which defy understanding, God has made his appeal through us (II Cor. 4:7-12 and 5:11-21). We are empowered to speak words of divine authority (Mt. 18:18 and Jn 20:23) and by our ministry to make disciples for the kingdom of God (Mt 28:16-20). May the Holy Spirit move the hearer to witness to God’s judgment and forgiveness.
