The ranks of the Royal Welch Fusiliers at Waterloo contained veterans from Egypt, Corunna, Albuera, Badajoz, and Orthes, as well as numerous other actions from Martinique in the Caribbean to Toulouse in the south of France.

Probably due to their experience and reputation, the Regiment was positioned in a more central role than the other two units of Mitchell's Brigade, and suffered disproportionate casualties among its officers.

This episode looks at the role of the Regiment in 1815 and what became of its men in the decades that followed.

Formed in 1813, they were the only British unit at Waterloo who had not seen action before. A very special episode first published on the anniversary of Waterloo. Special guest Richard Heffer, who starred as Mercer in the 1970 epic Waterloo kindly reprises his role to read the lines of 2nd Captain Alexander Cavalie Mercer, who commanded G-Troop at Waterloo.

Despite being the least experienced troop at Waterloo, G-Troop is more famous than all other British artillery troops and batteries combined due to the extraordinarily thorough journal kept by Mercer. This episode not only examines the campaign through his words but also considers his unusually compassionate nature.

At Waterloo the Regiment formed part of Adam's 3rd Brigade where it played an important roll on the right flank of the battlefield. Captain James Webber-Smith's Troop was placed in at least two different positions at Waterloo: to the north west of Hougoumont, firing down the pavé, the Nivelle Road, and then on the main ridge, alongside Bull and Ramsay. Personally, I suspect the lack of comment from Webber-Smith himself and the conflicting accounts (or at least timings) of others point to something unspoken - perhaps, that it was this troop of horse artillery that Augustus Frazer mentions retiring due to heavy French fire, and then having to be ordered back into position. Who knows?

Continuing the story of "The Battle Within The Battle", this episode moves eastwards from Episode 28 on the Coldstream Guards, from the walled garden and into the large apple orchard. This was the battlefield over which the Third Regiment of Foot Guards fought throughout the 18th June 1815 - charging up to line the ditch at the thick head to the south, being beaten back to the sunken lane, where they would reform and repeat the same advance. Throughout the day, the Regiment was able to repulse a larger French force due to the help of the devastating fire coming from the Coldstream lining the east wall of the garden.

Accounts of Waterloo from the other ranks in the artillery are extremely rare, so this is an invaluable memoir from an ordinary Gunner providing detail on 16th-19th June. His words provide new insights into the Troop's movements with graphic descriptions of the casualties among his officers and comrades.
