The Democratic Convention in Chicago - August 16, 1956 - Before he became JFK, John Kennedy ran for the nomination for Vice President in a four-way race that went to two long ballots. After leading on the second one, he ultimately lost to Senator Estes Kefauver of Tennessee.
That year was only the second time political conventions were televised coast to coast.
The conventions of that time had it all...rallies after nomination speeches, multiple ballots, horse trading for votes, uncertainty of outcomes, Shakespeare in speeches, a twenty-two-minute ovation, and, in the end, a peaceful transfer of power.
Go back to the conventions of 1956, 1960 and 1964 with me on a journey that shows another time when grit and resilience were very much alive.
