Today we will be breaking down the 2021 film "The White Tiger" directed by Ramin Bahrani and based on the 2008 novel by Aravind Adiga. The White Tiger follows Balram, a poor worker from rural India who gets a job as a driver for a rich family and forms a relationship with their youngest son Ashok. It’s clear from the beginning that Balram is being taken advantage of and abused by the rich family, but Balram never complains mainly because of India’s caste system. Balram believes that since he is of low Caste he must always be obedient to members of the high castes like Ashok and his rich family. The White Tiger follows a common theme in recent movies of poor people rising up against their rich employers, but since this story was originally published in 2008 it was actually ahead of the curve. In this video we discuss the economic and social changes in India during the time of the book's release that led working class Indians to no longer want to be subservient to the rich and powerful.
