A lucky chance meeting
I met Sonny Brewer recently in a different context and found that he was a writer. Picked up 3 of his books on Amazon. This was the first that I read. Almost finished with the second one, "The Poet of Tolstoy Park. His work is based on true stories. When I finish I may go to Fairhope and see if there is actually a round concrete house in a place called Tolstoy Park.
These may be more interesting to me because I'm in the local and have heard some of the truths but his books are well written, spin an interesting tail. I can't wait to get to the 3rd book, "Cormac, a Dog gone Missing" because the description sounds much like my reaction if my best 4 legged friend went missing.
I recommend this.
Experience the beauty.
If you like Pat Conroy's writing style, you will like Sonny Brewer. As I read this book, Mr. Brewer's beautiful and poetic words allowed me to see, feel, hear, smell the magical setting of this book.
Big Little Book
Amazing! Why have I not heard of this book before now? Can't imagine anyone not liking this magical story, and so happy I read it!
Fine author, Great read
Sonny Brewer is an excellent writer. Do yourself a favor and read his other books. This one won't disappoint. An easy read.
Mesmerizing, Beautiful Tale of a Tree
Sonny Brewer weaves a beautiful, haunting, prosaic tale of a 500 year old oak tree in this fabulous little book. I first discovered Mr. Brewer inStories From the Blue Moon Cafe, which he edited. It's an amazing collection of stories by Southern authors which I highly recommend. I then stumbled uponThe Poet of Tolstoy Park: A Novelat the library and recognized Mr. Brewer's name. Reading that book, I instantly fell in love with Mr. Brewer's elegant writing style and artful storytelling.
He doesn't disappoint in this new book which I highly anticipated. The tale of the beautiful young widow and her relationship with the old Ghosthead Oak is at the heart of this moving tale. When the widow is talking to the veteran about the Ghosthead Oak and says, "Can't you see how loving something might cost you another thing you love? Like Abraham for the love of God was willing to sacrifice his son....", my heart just skipped a beat. His writing is top notch, so unlike many novelists we read nowadays. Then, there's the widow's zombie goats, the elusive panther and the widow's own fearless dog to contend with. Mr. Brewer takes the reader on a memorable, heart-wrenching journey in only 219 pages which left me wanting more. This book is pure Southern storytelling at it's very best and I highly recommend it. I'd have given it ten stars if I could.
