The Will To Believe

Listen Later

Join host Bruce Paolozzi, along with panelists Lenny Esposito with Come Reason Ministries and staff apologist Jacob Daniels, as we explore the classic essay by William James, "The Will to Believe." James was an important American philosopher who helped develop pragmatic philosophy. His famous essay is concerned with epistemic justification of belief, and in doing so in a way that does not ignore the pragmatic aspect of how people believe. In other words, James paid close attention to the psychology of belief. He was writing against the strict empiricists of his day, such as William K. Clifford, who claimed that not only is a belief based on insufficient evidence unwarranted, but also unethical. James desired to defend faith against claims that faith runs contrary to intellectual responsibility. As long as our intellectual responsibility is satisfied, we have a right to believe what we will to believe. James explains how this responsibility is fulfilled without appealing to strict empiricism, making great use of the consequences of belief when reason cannot decide. Join us as we explore "The Will to Believe," investigating where it may be helpful and where it seems to go awry.
