The world loves a leaderboard, even when it comes to faith. One author tried to rank the most influential people in history and put Jesus near the top but not first. That kind of list might be interesting, but it dodges the only question that actually reaches your heart: who do you say Jesus Christ is?

We trace Jesus and the disciples from a confrontation with Pharisees and Sadducees who demand a “sign from heaven” to a warning that still feels painfully current: beware the leaven of false teaching. Jesus refuses to play proof-games with cynical hearts and points instead to the “sign of Jonah,” a clear line to the resurrection. A desperate mother chases Jesus into a house, won’t stop pleading, and then answers him with one of the most unforgettable lines in the Gospels: even the crumbs are enough. Clean hands, spotless routines, flawless church attendance, perfectly chosen words, all of it can still hide a heart that is far from God. We dig into the moment religious leaders confront Jesus over a seemingly small issue: his disciples eating with unwashed hands. What looks like a debate about tradition quickly turns into a piercing diagnosis of religious hypocrisy, where “doing it right” becomes more important than loving God and obeying his Word.

We walk through Jesus’ response as he quotes Isaiah and then exposes a specific, uncomfortable example: Corban. It is a religious-sounding vow that let people keep their money “dedicated to God” while neglecting their own parents. That story forces a hard question: how often do we use spiritual language to defend selfish choices? They wanted another free lunch. Jesus offered something far more confronting: Himself. We step into John chapter 6 at one of the most misunderstood moments in the Gospels, where a crowd runs after Jesus right after the miracle of the loaves, only to be rebuked for craving benefits instead of believing the sign. That tension feels modern because it is modern. We all know what it’s like to want God to fix a job, a relationship, a health scare, or a string of bad days, and to drift when He won’t play along.

From there, we unpack Jesus’ command to stop laboring for “food that perishes” and to pursue the “food that endures to eternal life.” The crowd pushes back with a stunning demand for a bigger sign than Moses, aiming for daily manna on command.
