Matthew’s gospel beginning with Jesus’ genealogy, which includes women, can seem tedious, and even boring. Yet it shows God’s planning for the arrival of His Son. Their stories change how we see other people’s stories—people are not lost causes or too different but worthy of time, grace, and love—for Jesus came for such as these.
Key Verses: This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah… Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar… Boaz the father or Obed, whose mother was Ruth… David the father of Solomon, whose mother had been Uriah’s wife… Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah. (Matthew 1:1,3,5,6, 16)
