The Word in Their Voices: A Catholic Pilgrim’s Journey Through Scripture and Poetry by Augustine Jeyaraj

Listen Later

The Author

Dr Augustine Jeyaraj is a physician and liver transplant surgeon whose calling in medicine has always been guided by a deep sense of purpose and compassion. Beyond the operating room, he has been a lifelong student of Scripture and in 2003 that following took on a new meaning as he converted to Catholicism.

For the past fifteen years Dr Jeyaraj has focused a lot of his energy into the rich spiritual heritage of the church particularly the writings of the early fathers, the wisdom of the mystics and the pensive theological viewpoints of the saints. From his investigatory findings his first book in thisseries ‘The Word in Their Voices’ was published in July of this year. The aim of this book and the series is to highlight the heartfelt beauty of Christian heritage in a modern approachable style.

Dr Jeyaraj lives in Singapore with his wife and three children, not forgetting Cosmo the family cavapoo. When not operating or writing, he enjoys reading a good science fiction book, a game of chess and of course cheering on his favourite football teams. He enjoys an eclectic ensemble of musical tastes especially songs that carry an ethical message of truth and meaning.

When you look at his life, his work, his Christian thinking you’ll start to see how this book and the others to follow in the series have evolved, so let’s turn our attention to this first book of his.

The Book

There are ten sectors to this book, or would you say chapters hmm…, possibly. Could you describe them as ten areas of powerful considerations of spiritual guidance for the modern world, yes. Could you describe them as significant environments of poetic writings with underlining scriptorial content, yes. Are the writings in this book set out in such away inviting the reader to encounter venerated Scripture as a living drama as opposed to mere written passages from the bible’s past, yes. How you view the contents of this book I leave up to you once you have read it, you might agree with me or not but read it.
