THE WORK OF A NEW TESTAMENT CHURCH - MAKING DISCIPLES -- Matthew 28:18-20

Listen Later

Sadly, the true state of many modern churches is that we are satisfied to be saved, but we are not motivated to see others come to know and serve Christ as Savior and Lord. It is my humble belief that most of the Lord’s churches in the 21st century have forgotten the purpose for their existence. Too many believe that their responsibility begins and ends at coming to church a couple of times (or maybe only once) a week, pray when we can, read the Bible now and then, and live a life that is slightly cleaner than that of the lost world around us. We have forgotten that our orders are not to sit by while the world drops off into hell, but to go into that world and tell them the glorious news of our Savior. We are saved out of the world, but we are left in the world that we might witness to the world. So many of the Lord’s true churches have pulled the covers of complacency and apathy up over their heads and have fallen into the slumber of self-satisfaction and comfort as the world has continued its plunge toward hell. And while we sleep, the door of evangelism in America closes. We would do well (and need) to follow the instruction of Paul in Romans 13:11: “And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.” "High time" says, " It is the day. It is the hour." (It is also translated “instant.”) Colleges and universities are closing their campuses to evangelism and Christian groups. They do not want them sharing the Gospel on campus. They will only allow them to operate if they promise not to attempt to evangelize students on campus. Thirty or forty years ago you could approach the door of a stranger, tell who you were and what you wanted, and they would more than likely let you in and listen as you shared the Gospel. That probably will not happen today. Before He ascended into Heaven, Jesus issued what has come to be called The Great Commission. "COMMISSION" speaks of a command; an authoritative command; a directive. Jesus spoke these words directly to that first church and indirectly to us. He was giving the church her marching orders, and telling us what He expects us to do in His physical absence. That first church took this command seriously, went into the world, shared the Gospel, and thousands were saved. Their message was so powerful and their witness so effective, that they were accused of “turning the world upside down.” That was then; this is now! What was given as the Great Commission has turned into the Great Omission. What does it mean when something is omitted? It is left out, left undone; neglected. Instead of taking the Gospel to the ends of the earth, most who profess Christ today won’t take it to the end of the street. Listen to these statistics. Ninety-five (95) percent of all believers have never led a soul to Christ, not one. Eighty (80) percent of believers do not consistently witness. Less than 2% are involved in evangelism. However, in spite of conditions and our excuses, The Great Commission still stands, and God still expects His people in this age to make disciples through the “process” given in Matthew 28:19-20. It is a very simple command to “go,” “to make,” “to baptize,” and “to teach.” Until God’s people in the 21st century feel the burden of that simple command this nation will sink lower and lower until finally it ends up in the trash bin of nations that have rejected God. But if we will go in loving obedience to His command, we will not go in our own strength but in His unlimited authority and ability. In the verses of our text Jesus tells us how to carry out this commission, this command to make disciples for Him.

I. THERE IS THE EVANGELIZING OF SINNERS.

II. THERE IS THE ENLISTING OF THE SAVED.

III. THERE IS THE EDIFYING OF THE SAINTS.
