This is a wonderful book with amazing illustrations! I enjoyed reading it myself, and now I am going to read it to my 6 year old twins.
Shows how music inspired and encouraged during the Holocaust
The Wren is a man who sings beautifully and owns a hurdy-gurdy. He has one devoted student known as the Sparrow. When the Wren's life is put in danger during the Holocaust, so is his beloved musical instrument. He thinks of a safe way to protect it though, maybe even forever. The illustrations will give children a bigger (blown up) view of life with people experiencing the Holocaust in this town, in a fictionalized "it might have been like this" kind of way.
This book showed a deep picture of something that was very real during the Holocaust, using music to encourage and inspire, and also showed ways people protected musical instruments from harm. I never thought of people wanting to protect their musical instruments during the Holocaust, so it opened my eyes to be able to see that and I hope it will for children also. Sometimes the people's instruments survived but they didn't though. It also shows how lively towns can shrivel up when the people, animals, and even musical instruments in it are put in harms way but how music can bring it and people back alive in some ways.
