Debriefing:

Not even an actual alien invasion could keep fans of the iconic science fiction series “The X-Files” away from Thursday’s highly-anticipated 20th anniversary panel in Ballroom 20. Yes, it’s been 20 years (how old does that make you feel?)
Mulder (David Duchovny looking rumpled but cute as per usual) and Scully (Gillian Anderson looking hot and blonde) and creator Chris Carter were on hand at the reunion to discuss the rich legacy of the show in American pop culture in general and TV in particular.
Not even the Lone Gunmen could argue the tremendous impact of “The X Files,” which opened the door for science fiction and fantasy in mainstream TV culture. The show skipped through genres from horror to comedy with aplomb while never letting go of its central premiere that a massive government conspiracy was affoot to monitor the populace (sound familiar?).
The panel moderator, TV Guide’s Los Angeles Bureau Chief Michael Schnieder, hailed the cult classic show as groundbreaking, “making genre safe for mainstream televsion.”
One of the most surprising aspects of the panel was how young the fanbase is. Many fans had not been born when the show first hit the air and an impressive number of young women said they pursued science because of Scully, whom Carter called his “fantasy woman.”
Anderson and Duchovny left open the possibility of a new movie and when the crowd roared in approval, Carter looked visibly moved.
Duchovny (“Californication”) said that the chemistry between him and Anderson was such that: “If we have a chance to come back together, we will.”
Of course, devotees of the show know not to take that too seriously because you can trust no one.
