Redemption
- What comes to mind when you hear the word redemption, redeemed, or any other variants of the word?
- I first think of a coupon or winning lottery ticket.
- However, I think in a biblical sense, almost every Christian can agree that the concept of redemption is greatly more significant than the simple cashing in of a piece of paper.
- Old Testament Context
- Initial
- Exodus 6:6
- Redeeming of Israel from Egypt.
- Practical & Societal
- Leviticus 25
- Sabbath Year.
- Year of Jubilee (see quote below).
- You almost see this progressive, multi-level view of redemption.
- New Testament Context
- How does Jesus Christ fit into all of this?
- Romans 11:26 (Isaiah 59:20)
- Luke 4:18-19
- Romans 8:23
- Hebrews 8:6 (better promises of New Covenant).

- This redemptive-historical approach has the advantage of avoiding the debates about capitalism or socialism that we might put forward. The purpose of Jubilee was not income equality but that no Israelite would permanently lose the enjoyment of sitting under “his vine and under his fig tree” (Mic. 4:4).
