Elements of Mutual Aid

There Are Times When We Are Few

Listen Later

In this clip we highlight Daniel, a Honduran migrant and anti-authoritarian youth organizer who has devoted himself to supporting other refugees and developing community power through mutual aid.

We’re proud to have spent time with Contra Viento y Marea last summer as they support the refugees who stop in Tijuana, Mexico - many on their way north from South America and the Caribbean; facing sever conditions and political repression along the way. The so-called migrant crisis is a direct result of western imperialism and capitalist-induced climate chaos.

CVM is a mutual aid group born out of la caravanas in 2018. While walking thousands of miles by foot in large groups, some people would cook food and gather supplies to support each other. This spirit of solidarity was infectious, and when they reached Tijuana, they were able to occupy a warehouse and establish a thriving mutual aid hub. Daily meetings were held to organize and create demands.

After intense repression, siege, and eviction by militarized police, CVM decentralized across Tijuana to continue supporting their community.

Today, they run an autonomous kitchen where they receive donations, distribute aid, and prepare thousands of meals each week.

Even when they are few, this crew never runs out of food - or love in their hearts. They manage to get support from groups in the US and partner with locals who believe in dignity and solidarity.
