The Sadducees approached Jesus with no intent to learn, but only to trap Him in His words (cf. Mark 12:13 – “they sent some Pharisees and supporters of Herod to trap him in his words”). As the aristocratic priestly party controlling the temple in Jerusalem, they held political and religious power (Acts 4:1-2; Acts 5:17). They accepted only the Pentateuch (the first five books of Moses) as authoritative and denied the resurrection, angels, and spirits (Acts 23:8), claiming no explicit mention of life after death appears in Genesis through Deuteronomy—especially in the Levitical marriage law they cited (Deuteronomy 25:5-6).
