In 1901, two phonograph repairmen uncovered a wax cylinder deep in an abandoned barn. It should’ve contained a song. Instead, it played a synthetic voice—digitized, intelligent, and 80 years too early. The timestamp on the wax was real. So was the voice. But no one could explain how either got there.
