Tech Show BUT Friendly

They are wrong about the 4080 😡 NVIDIA sells slower chips to the Chinese Market 🤡 Deepcool impresses yet again with their new LT series aios 🌬️ Garena is 💩 and soon we won't need to put up with it anymore

Listen Later

Thanks for lending me your ear.

4080 is out

- good but too expensive, it’s touted as roughly double the speed of the 3080

at roughly the same price (although sticker price of the 3080 on launch was

around USD700) – and once developers optimize for DLSS 3 Nvidia claims a 300 or

400% increase

- didn’t matter as outlets abroad have reported it sold out

- continues the trend of LARGE cards

There is strong demand fpr Lovelace GPUs with demand outstripping supply

https://www.tomshardware.com/news/nvidias-revenue-drops-further-but-demand-for-ada-gpus-exceeds-supply

- on one hand this is amazing hardware, really a big jump forward... so isn’t

it fair to pay for this advance?

- a lot of reviewers complain that nvidia is pricing out enthusiasts – straw man

and either or fallacy

Two months after the U.S. choked off China’s access to two of Nvidia’s high-endmicrochips, the American semiconductor design giant unveiled a substitute witha reduced processing speed for its second-largest market. The Nvidia A800 graphic processing unit is “another alternative product to theNvidia A100 GPU for customers in China,” a spokesperson for Nvidia said in astatement to TechCrunch. “The A800 meets the U.S. government’s clear test forreduced export control and cannot be programmed to exceed it.” The new chip wasfirst reported by Reuters on Monday. The A100 processor is known for powering supercomputers, artificialintelligence and high-performing data centers for industries ranging frombiotech and finance to manufacturing. Alibaba’s cloud computing business has been one of its customers. A100, along with Nvidia’senterprise AI chip H100, were placed under a U.S. export control list to“address the risk that the covered products may be used in, or diverted to, a‘military end use’ or ‘military end user’ in China and Russia.”

In hardware news not related to GPUs, Deepcool launched their new LT aios this

week and they were kind enough to send us advanced copies.

- great perf, they really are just getting better and better over time

As previously reported, Riot Games will replace Garena as the publisher ofTeamfight Tactics and League of Legends in Southeast Asia. Riot Games willintroduce new servers for League of Legends and Teamfight Tactics as part ofthe publishing transition, and Garena servers will stop operating by January2023.However,this does not mean players in the Southeast Asia region must create a newaccount because they are able to migrate their accounts from Garena to the RiotClient starting 18 January.

- Garena was basically terrible, a

client that took forever to update, one that even cryptomined apparently at one

point, predatory micro transactions ,no cross play between different servers

- the LOL PH YT channel has a video welcoming players

- all comments I’ve seen are overwhelmingly positive

NB.

This episode's script.

Dashes

are notes where I have specific info I want to say but am comfortable to wing

it (ie. too lazy to write out a verbatim script).

Comparing this to the final show you notice I digress a lot.

(Apologies for the typos, my Word doesn't have spell check for some reason.)
