They Shall Be Wanderers

Listen Later

This morning we continue in our study through the book of Hosea as we consider Hosea 9:1-17. In the text Hosea describes how the Lord will punish Israel. The people have forsaken their God therefore they will be exiled to Assyria. Israel has deeply corrupted themselves as in the days of Gibeah. Their glory shall fly away like a bird. Hosea concludes, "My God will reject them because they have not listened to him; they shall be wanderers among the nations" (Hosea 9:17). What we see in Hosea 9 are reversals of the promises of covenant blessings for obedience. Since Israel has forgotten their Creator, they have rejected life and peace in right relationship with God. The only hope for Israel and for the nations is the beloved Son of God who was put to death on behalf of sinners. Jesus was punished in the place of His people. He is the Son of Man who gave his life as a ransom for many. In our natural state we are deserving of punishment and condemnation, but if anyone turns to Jesus they can be made new. Hosea 9 serves as a warning to us and an opportunity to rejoice in the grace of God.
