They Will Mourn for Him

Acts 2:22-23 and Zechariah 12:10-14
Continuing in our sermon series, "Dust to Dust: Preparing Our Hearts for Easter”, we are looking forward to the text for the 28th day of Lent from the Book of Zechariah. The text tells us that they will mourn for him whom they have pierced. Who is this? It is God speaking about himself. How can God be pierced? Should his piercing be mourned? By whom should it be mourned? What does this mourning mean? How does God respond to this piercing?
The answer to these questions all come together when we see Jesus Christ pierced for our transgressions and nailed to the cross for our sins. 
But, how amazing is God’s response to our piercing of him? Instead of anger and vengeance, we get, poured out on us, a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy. 
This unexpected response from a holy God is why we can both mourn and celebrate at the Table of the Lord. For there we see at once what our sin did to God, and how much God loves us. 
Looking upon Christ, giving Him this type of consideration, mourning, then, becomes an appropriate celebration of the memorial of our redemption.
