Soooooo much back story. Infodumps galore
Um... I don't want to be scathingly mean, but I truly think the author could have used a decent writing group who were willing to give honest and blunt feedback. I think this book needed a few more rounds of edits before the publish button was pushed.
The premise is a fun idea. Female assassin? Cool! Forced to do a job because of blackmail? Fun! But... oh boy. The writing itself could use some serious fine tuning so that things make more sense, the back story isn't so overwhelming, and the pacing speeds up.
Soooo much back story. The pages and pages of infodumps could be reduced to a few clever lines of dialogue via an argument between characters and some emotional responses to environment or other people. I ended up skipping the flashbacks and memories of past events. I don't need to know the minute details to figure out motivation. Man is upset over a king's decision = wants him assassinated. Simple enough; I don't need ALL of the gory details about all of the whos invovled, every single why, and the confusing where's and whatfores included.
It was difficult to get through all of the superfluous information to figure out just who I was supposed to be rooting for and why I should care. Can't say I ended up caring at all.
It's commendable to have written a novel and finished it. It would be even more commendable to have paid an editor to go over it after having serious feedback and discussions with a good writing group. It's not always easy to hear what needs to be tweaked, especially when it's your favorite bits, but oh honey. :( This story deserves the time and care that a couple of good rounds of editing would do for it.
A good read
Some trouble trying to make sense of the geography at first; however, not sticking to a real world atlas got me over that hurtle. The story itself is very interesting with a nice twist at the end.
Excellent Read!
I know Tonya and was leery of reading her book afraid I may not like it. But I WAS WRONG! I loved it I stayed up late several nights cause I had to know what happened! Its a great read with excellent pacing and such entertaining and rich characters. I loved the rich world she created and the details used to make it stand out. I cannot wait to read the second book to learn more about the characters and places mentioned! I highly suggest this book.
I read a book, and I like it. Enthralled by Thine Enemy's Eyes!
