Google and similar large tech companies in Silicon Valley have a bottom-up culture that require specific skills (leadership, collaboration, etc.). Google Directors are considered part of company leadership and usually lead organizations of hundreds of people. They are expected not only to be good leaders and communicators, but also to have unquestionable expertise in the area of responsibility.
