Interviewer: “Can you state your name for the cameras?”
Thirdy: “Thirdy...Thirdy the Mischievous Lower Third.”
Interviewer: “Can you tell us a bit about your role on JackAm?”
Thirdy: “Yeah, I was uh..the the third character, y’know...The lower third on the show?”
Interviewer: “As the lower third, what were you responsible for on the show?”
Thirdy: “Ah, you know a little bit of everything: look pretty, remember topics...stuff like that.”
Interviewer: “Were you ever unhappy as the lower third on JackAm?”
Thirdy: “Well who’s ever really happy right?[laughter]...I was..I was nothing y’know and Jack he...well, plucked me out of obscurity y’know and made some API calls uh, hooked me up with this job and everything, and I-i’ll always be grateful to him for that y’know...he didn’t have to do that.. helpin’ out a young kid like me...[clears throat]”
Interviewer: “Interesting, I haven’t mentioned Jack, your former employer. I asked if *you* were ever unhappy working as the lower third, yet you bring him up anyway. Did Jack make you unhappy when you worked with him?”
Thirdy: “Well that's uh...[clears throat] can I smoke in here?”
Interviewer: “By all means.”
Thirdy: [smoking] “Jack uh...well it was never enough...for him, y'know, It was always, me, me, me: ‘Thirdy you’re doin dis wrong’, ‘Thirdy we need tah’ change dis’, ‘Thirdy we need tah’ change dat’, ‘Thirdy we need tah’ give you a facelift’, on-and-on y’know? I wasn’t good enough. Not for him, not ever. “
Interviewer: “That sounds difficult, like a lot of stress. Did Jack stress you often?”
Thirdy: [crying] “Yeah…”
Interviewer: “Is that why you took to drugs?”
Thirdy:[wipes eyes] “Yeah, I was taking everything: SQL injections, buffer overflows, bad API-calls, you name it. The high never lasted long, but at least I felt something. At least, *I* was in control of something for once.”
Interviewer: “And they started to affect your work negatively, the drugs?”
Thirdy: “Yeah, I mean, I-I couldn’t focus, couldn’t remember topics, my log files were a mess… Some days I didn’t even show up to work y’know I... I-- I’m sorry, can I take a moment?”
Interviewer: “Please take your time, more tissues are over there.”
[The interview resumes some 15 minutes later]
Interviewer: “If you could say something to Jack right now, what would it be?
Thirdy: I’d tell him...I’m valid, I’d tell him, I have feelings... I’d tell him, I have two wonderful children who mean the world to me, and that I’ve been sober for four years now… but most of all [sobs], I’d tell him to go to hell.”
