THINKING POINT: Violence in the bus industry

In the past 18 months, there has been a heated dispute surrounding travel routes in the public transport sector. There have been targeted incidents of intimidation, shooting and stoning. These incidents have put passengers and staff in danger, as attacks have taken place at bus premises as well.

Intercape carries up to 1,2 million commuters every year and since 2019, it has reported 150 violent incidents. The bus carrier has called for the President and the Department of Transport to intervene. According to the Department of Transport, an inter-ministerial committee has been created to address these reports.
