Third Person Pt. 1: It Depends On Who I’m With - 9/1/2024

Our Bible is Broken up into a couple of significant parts...

- The Old Testament

- The New Testament

So here are a couple of rules for reading the OT....

1. The Old Testament reveals humanity's need for God that even those with the law of God would fail and need more than a set of rules.

2. The Old Testament had real value for its original readers (those pre-Jesus).

3. The Old Testament points towards one Hero - Jesus.

So here we find three Jewish young men: Hannaniah, Mishael, and Azariah. As part of their integration, their names are changed to Shadrach, Meschach, and Abednego. They face the challenge of keeping the law of the Lord while in captivity, surrounded by a culture that wants them to do just about the opposite of everything the Lord wants.

Daniel 3:16-18 (NIV)

- Sometimes, when we are in a situation with our backs against the wall, we must remember that HE IS ABLE. God, the source of all power and strength, can intervene and is faithful! God is faithful in every storm, fire, and back-against-the-wall situation.

- In a society that we live in that prides itself on being self-sufficient, where we are tempted to worship our self-sufficiency or our bank accounts or our political parties. God is looking for a people who will stand strong on His promises and say, "We won't bow down because our God is faithful!" He is for you!

God's ability to act and faithfulness are not based on how I think things should work.

Daniel 3:23-26 (NIV)

- Whether God rescues you in the fire or not, you are never alone! We serve a God who, when He walked this earth, said I will never leave you or forsake you. If you are in a fire, look around, you aren't alone! Jesus is with you.

- In the Old Testament, fire often symbolizes a place for sacrifice, purification, or God's presence. When those boys entered the flames, they entered bound up, to suffer, to burn to death, to be consumed as an offering to their King, who wanted them dead.

It matters who you are with. If Jesus is with you, you can walk in every fire and every storm, and you can walk in freedom!

I love that the men in the furnace, once their chains were gone, didn't run out of the furnace; they wanted to be with Jesus.

Time with Jesus in the fire is a million times better than time without Jesus outside of the fire!

But that's the great thing about Jesus. He isn't just in the fire. I kept thinking at Baptism last week that Jesus was in the river with us. He was in the water with you at your baptism. He is walking with you into the workplace. He is going to your school with you. Jesus is walking through your trial. He is walking through your broken relationship..

In a world that tries to get us to compromise, you can hold onto God's faithfulness and trust that He is with you because He lives inside you. The God of the universe wants to dwell inside you so that He goes with you wherever you go.
