#THIRDTHURSDAY: Food Insecurity, Nutrition, and Functional Impairment: Where does Physical Therapy fit? (October 2022)

This #THIRDTHURSDAY course is designed to open a discussion about the interconnectedness of functional impairments and nutrition in the care of persons facing chronic health conditions. Information will be provided to promote a quick assessment of food insecurity among the patient populations we serve and practical ideas to address the deficits. A guided discussion with participants will also occur on meaningful ways to cause impact in the clinical setting in which they work.

Dr. Ann W. Jackson, DPT, PT, MPH shares her insight and expertise on "Food Insecurity, Nutrition, and Functional Impairment: Where does Physical Therapy fit?"

What to expect: 

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe food insecurity and identify the factors that are used to determine if an individual is food insecure.
  • Analyze the relationship between food insecurity, chronic disease, frailty and functional impairment.
  • Evaluate the available outcome measures to screen for food insecurity and functional impairment in the clinical environment.
  • Discuss the role and ethical responsibility of the rehabilitation provider in identifying food insecurity in relation to the PT scope of practice in providing nutritional support and counseling in an effort to maximize management of chronic disease and optimize function.
  • Explore possible opportunities of engagement within your community to address food insecurity among medically vulnerable populations.
    • About the Speaker: 

    Dr. Ann W. Jackson, DPT, PT, MPH is a licensed Physical Therapist, adjunct lecturer and clinical assistant professor with a dual appointment with the University of Illinois at Chicago. She holds appointments in the College of Applied Health Sciences, Rehabilitation Sciences Department at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and an appointment in the College of Medicine Department of Medical Education (ethics and humanities curriculum).
