Advent: This Child is Mighty God

Scripture: Isaiah 9:6

For to us a child is born,

to us a son is given,

and the government will be on his shoulders.

And he will be called

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

—Isaiah 9:6 NIV

BIG IDEA = This child is Mighty God, the Son given to us is King, Jesus the Word.

Intro:

1. child = God

a. “I will wait for the Lord,” —Isaiah 8:17a

b. “For to us a child is born” —Isaiah 8:6

c. “Mighty God” —Isaiah 8:6

2. The Son = King

a. “to us a son is given” —Isaiah 8:6

b. “The government will be on his shoulders” —Isaiah 8:6

c. “Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom,” —Isaiah 9:7

3. Jesus = Word

a. “In the beginning was the Word, & the Word was with God, & the Word WAS God.” —John 1:1

b. “If anyone does not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn.” —Isaiah 8:20b

Application: LOOK AT THE BOOK

Look to God’s Word

1. John 1:14 The Word became flesh & made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one & only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace & truth.

2. BIG IDEA: child = GOD = Son = King = Jesus Christ = Word
