👻 EPISODE 24 – THE POLTERGEIST OF WILDEN MANOR

Deep in the Bedfordshire countryside lies the quiet village of Wilden. But behind its peaceful rural setting is a strange tale of unexplained disturbances, mysterious happenings and an alleged poltergeist that has become part of the area’s paranormal history.

Our story takes us back to the 19th century, when reports of unsettling events and an extraordinary encounter on a lonely country road would leave more questions than answers.

What really happened in Wilden? Were these events the work of something supernatural, or could there be a more earthly explanation?

Join Kathryn and Alison as they explore the story, while Andrew digs into the research behind this fascinating slice of Bedfordshire’s haunted past.

This episode also draws upon research featured in Damien O’Dell’s book Paranormal Bedfordshire, which we recommend to anyone interested in discovering more about the county’s strange and mysterious history.

Was something truly haunting Wilden Manor? Or has time transformed an unusual series of events into something far more sinister?

🎧 Turn down the lights, settle in… and join us for another episode of This Is A Ghost Story.

  • Episode 23 - Barney: The Berkhamsted Poltergeist

It’s just after four o’clock in the morning.

Ken Monger is awake and making his way downstairs towards the kitchen.

But when he reaches the door, something is wrong.

The kitchen has been completely turned upside down.

And this would be far from the last strange event to trouble the Monger family.

In 1980, Ken and Jenny Monger temporarily moved into a council house in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, while their usual home was being modernised.

Almost immediately, unexplained things began to happen.

Objects moved. Strange noises were heard. The family experienced disturbances they simply couldn’t explain.

And before long, whatever was responsible had been given a name:

    Barney.

This week on This Is A Ghost Story, Kathryn & Alison tell the strange story of the Berkhamsted Poltergeist — a case that became serious enough to attract the attention of the local press.

Then Producer Andrew digs into the research, including contemporary newspaper reporting from November 1980, to find out what we can establish about the Monger family, their temporary home and the strange events said to have taken place there.

Who — or what — was Barney?

And what really happened inside that ordinary Hertfordshire house more than 45 years ago?

  • Episode 22 - The A70 UFO Case

    👽 EPISODE 22 — THE A70 UFO CASE

On a cold November night in 1992, two men were driving along Scotland’s remote A70 road when they encountered something they could not explain.

What began as an ordinary journey home would become one of Scotland’s most intriguing UFO cases.

As Garry Wood and Colin Wright travelled through the dark countryside near Edinburgh, they spotted a strange object hovering above the road ahead. Moments later, their memories seemed to stop.

When they came to, they were still in the car — but something was wrong.

They were much further along their journey than they should have been.

And more than an hour of their lives appeared to be missing.

What happened during those lost minutes would only emerge later, when hypnotic regression reportedly uncovered disturbing memories of a terrifying encounter.

But what really happened on the A70 that night?

Was it an alien abduction? A strange psychological experience? Or could there be another explanation entirely?

Kathryn and Alison tell the extraordinary story of The A70 UFO Case, before Andrew digs into the research, the investigation that followed, and the theories surrounding one of Scotland’s strangest alleged close encounters.

  • Episode 21 - The Phantom Hitchhiker of Stanbridge

    A lonely country road.

A driver travelling through the Bedfordshire countryside.

And a passenger who seemingly disappears without a trace.

This week on This Is A Ghost Story, we head to the small village of Stanbridge and one of the strangest ghost stories to emerge from the local area.

For years, stories have circulated of a mysterious figure encountered on the roads around Stanbridge — a phantom hitchhiker whose appearance has left those who claim to have seen them with an experience they cannot easily explain.

It’s a classic piece of ghostly folklore: a solitary figure beside the road, an unsuspecting motorist and a journey that takes a decidedly supernatural turn.

But where did the story come from?

Is the Phantom Hitchhiker of Stanbridge based on a genuine encounter? Has the tale changed as it has been passed from person to person? And why do remarkably similar stories of vanishing hitchhikers appear all over Britain — and around the world?

Kathryn and Alison tell the story, before Producer Andrew digs into the history and folklore surrounding the case and takes a closer look at the enduring legend of the Vanishing Hitchhiker.

Was somebody really encountered on a dark Bedfordshire road?

Could there be a more ordinary explanation?

Or does something still wait beside the road at Stanbridge for the next unsuspecting driver to come along?

As always… we’ll leave that for you to decide.

    🚗 A lonely road.

    👤 A mysterious passenger.

👻 And a journey the witnesses would never forget.

  • Episode 20 - Ghosts Gone Wild

👻 EPISODE 20 — GHOSTS GONE WILDThe Funny Side of the Paranormal

This week’s episode contains bleeped swearing and words that may not be suitable for younger listeners.

Not every ghost story ends with screaming.

Sometimes the ghost tells you to f##k off.

Sometimes a UFO apparently abducts your dog, car AND tent.

And sometimes the mysterious object you’ve been following through the sky turns out to be… a Tesco carrier bag.

This week on This Is A Ghost Story, we’re doing something a little different.

Kathryn, Alison and Andrew take a trip through the stranger — and considerably funnier — side of the paranormal, digging into bizarre ghost encounters and some genuinely extraordinary reports preserved in Britain’s official Ministry of Defence UFO files.

We’ve got a foul-mouthed ghost at Dead Woman’s Ditch, a mysterious fireball that reportedly flew into a woman’s kitchen and landed in a carrier bag, a worried Springer Spaniel, a schoolgirl demanding UFO disclosure from the British government, police officers chasing something across Ohio… and a man who claimed he was living with an alien in Carlisle.

Plus phantom cats, pub ghosts, apparitions being completely ignored and the important question nobody else seems willing to ask:

If a ghost tells you to f##k off… do you actually have to?

Some of these encounters may have perfectly ordinary explanations. Others remain disputed or unexplained. But every case reminds us that the paranormal doesn’t always have to be terrifying.

    Sometimes… it’s just bloody weird.

    👻 LISTENER CHALLENGE

Have you ever had a paranormal experience that was actually funny?

Maybe you completely embarrassed yourself after mistaking something ordinary for a ghost or UFO. Maybe your resident spirit is more annoying than frightening. Or perhaps something genuinely unexplained happened that you couldn’t help laughing about afterwards.

    We want to hear it.

  • Episode 19 - Railway Cottage

    👻 EPISODE 19 — RAILWAY COTTAGE

An abandoned cottage. An overgrown path. And a voice from inside a house that should have been empty.

This week on This Is a Ghost Story, we bring you another chilling true listener experience.

When Dom arrived to begin work on an old railway cottage, the building had been left empty and almost swallowed by the undergrowth. But before the work had even properly begun, strange things started happening.

A voice heard when nobody else was there.

    Footsteps and unexplained sounds.

Objects seemingly moving on their own.

And the growing feeling that whoever — or whatever — remained inside the cottage wasn’t particularly pleased to have company.

Kathryn and Alison tell Dom’s story, before Andrew joins them to dig into the history, the possible explanations and the ghosts that have long been associated with Britain’s railways.

Was Railway Cottage simply an old building making old-building noises?

Or had Dom disturbed something that had been there long before he arrived?

🎧 Turn the lights down, put your headphones on… and come with us to Railway Cottage.

Was Travis Walton really taken aboard something not of this world?

    Was there another explanation?

After the events of Part One, Steven’s story was far from over.

  • Episode 15 - The Union Screaming House: Part 1 - The Old White House – (Part 1 of 2)

When single father Steven LaChance discovers a beautiful old white house in Union, Missouri, it feels like the fresh start his family desperately needs. Spacious, welcoming and full of character, the property seems almost too good to be true.

It isn’t long before unsettling details begin to emerge. Strange encounters. Unexplained occurrences. Neighbours behaving in ways that make little sense. With each passing day, an uneasy feeling grows that the family may not be the only occupants of the house.

In Part One of this extraordinary two-part story, Kathryn, Alison and Andrew explore the events that transformed a sceptical father into someone convinced that something beyond explanation had entered his life. Based on Steven LaChance’s own account, this is one of America’s most famous modern haunting cases—and one that continues to divide opinion.

But this is only the beginning…

Join us next week for Part Two – The House Comes Alive, where the story takes an even darker turn.
