Ephraim K Hands was my Great Grandfather. This story tells about the Martin handcart company that was stuck in devils gate in Wyoming. The terrible conditions that they sufferred as they crossed frozen streams and forged through snow. The prophet Brigham Young sent several wagons to rescue them only to be turned back because of the snow. Ephraim Hanks was in Draper when he received a visit from an angel telling him to prepare and rescue the saints. He packed up a wagon of provisions and headed toward Salt Lake City to greet the prophet. At that instant the prophet learned that the wagons that he sent were coming back. Ephraim said to the prophet that he was ready to go and the prophet sent him on his way. He went alone toward the handcart company really not knowing where they were. One night he was freezing cold and asked the lord to help him find something to eat. Not far away was a bull buffalo that he shot and skinned. The next day he found the handcart company and they stripped the horses of their buffalo meat...
