Jesus launches from His observations re: the scribes and Pharisees, illustrating that their ethic actually lowers the bar. God's calling is much higher, reaching to the perfection of YHWH that is at the heart of the Mosaic Code and lasts beyond its terminus. There are six examples Jesus employs to emphasize His superior ethos: arguments, both in the covenant community as well as adversarial relations outside the community; marital fidelity; divorce; truthfulness, generosity, and love.
