  • Closing One Door, Opening Another | Spiritual Myths

You're probably not bothered by a black cat crossing your path or a broken mirror. But how many spiritual superstitions do you engage in without even realizing it? When you really examine your heart, we think you might be surprised at the silly phrases we share with sincere hearts, not realizing the foolishness of the myth we're perpetuating. Those kinds of myths are ridiculous, like being afraid of the number 13. No, these spiritual superstitions are subtle and sometimes even righteous-sounding. Join Elizabeth Giles and Monika Walker in this episode as they explore many of the common myths that Christians can struggle with today.

Once identified, all these irreverent ways of thinking can be fought off by disciplining our hearts and minds with the true teaching of the Word. By saturating ourselves with the words of God, we can rest in the sweetness of our salvation and the reliability of our sovereign God. And that's way better than good luck!

1 Timothy 4:7–8 — Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

  • Reform Halloween | Reformation Day

Ghosts, goblins, skulls, and even demons—that's what lines my street this month. Whether you enjoy dressing up and taking your kids around the neighborhood to gather candy or strictly prohibit Halloween celebrations in your home, the glorification of evil throughout October is disgusting. When such evil surrounds us, the best place to look is to the Lord!

God did a great work through Martin Luther on October 31, 1517, when he presented his Ninety-Five Theses, challenging practices and teachings in the Roman Catholic Church. This event is traditionally commemorated as the beginning of the Protestant Reformation.

  • Apostles and Prophets | Biblical Terminology

Special guest Gary Oedy joined us to learn about apostles and prophets. As a righteous elder who serves our church faithfully, we knew the depth of his knowledge would be a blessing to us and our listeners—and boy, were we right! What is an apostle, anyway? Can you really become a prophet for less than $500? We cover all this and more in this special episode.

  • Church on the Lake | Worship

This song of praise fittingly ends the entire book of Psalms. It points us to worship the only One worthy of such worship. He is the Creator and Sustainer of all things. Our breath should be used to praise Him, and so should our hands and feet as we worship. We praise Him for who He is and for all the mighty deeds He has done for us, most importantly our salvation in Christ, which was His plan from the very beginning. What do we worship? Do we worship Him, or other gods that vie for our attention? Elizabeth Giles and Monika Walker look at Psalm 150.

  • A Perfect 68 Degrees | Worshipping Comfort

We want comfort financially and physically, so we worship all sorts of things. It is self-centered thinking, not God-centered thinking. We can lose our joy when we don't get "all the things." Our eyes become focused on the world rather than on the things above.

Seeking our own comfort is exhausting, fruitless, and leaves us more empty than when we started, full of discontentment and envy. We are created beings, which means we are dependent on a good and faithful Creator to meet our daily needs.

We were created as stewards of all the blessings of God, so the right response is to trust and worship God with all that He has given us to steward. We use our health, wealth, time, and achievements while here on earth to gain the bounty of heaven. That is the true comfort our souls must seek.

Luke 12: 16-21 16 And he told them a parable, saying, "The land of a rich man produced plentifully, 17 and he thought to himself, 'What shall I do, for I have nowhere to store my crops?' 18 And he said, 'I will do this: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. 19 And I will say to my soul, "Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry."' 20 But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?' 21 So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God."

  • Born for Eternity | A Story of Grace

Her womb was empty, but so were her arms.

At 40 weeks and three days pregnant, Allie and her husband, Jeramy, went to the hospital expecting to meet their healthy firstborn child. Instead, a doctor took Allie's hand and told them the words no parent ever wants to hear: their baby was gone.

The young couple faced the devastating reality of infant loss, empty arms, a nursery prepared for a baby who would never come home, and the question every grieving heart asks: Why?

But their story is not ultimately about death. It is about the character of God.

Through Scripture, prayer, the faithful ministry of their church, and the truth of God's sovereignty, Jeramy and Allie learned to grieve without despair. They discovered that trusting God is more than saying, "God is sovereign." It means believing that truth when the Lord takes away something you desperately wanted to keep.

Their journey through grief demonstrates a powerful testimony of God's sustaining grace - and of what it means to say, even through unimaginable sorrow, "It is well with my soul."

  • Burning Dirty Dishes | Laziness and Idleness

Idleness is self-focus - seeking to please and serve ourselves. We are called to be diligent and to live quiet, simple lives that glorify and honor God. We are not to be busybodies in our actions or our words, for that is a sign of idleness. Instead, we are to work diligently where God has placed us.

We do this so that we represent Christ well to the unbelievers around us and so that others do not have to carry our burdens or pick up our slack. We need to work faithfully and diligently where God has called us, without worrying about what everyone else is doing - or not doing.

When this is the day you have a lot on your plate and you're so tempted to check out - to put it off, to get a little "me time" instead of taking on the task at hand, to grumble and complain about all you have to do - pray.

Yeah, that's always what we say: pray, pray, and pray again. Pray that God would change your heart, that He would give you a joyful attitude as you work diligently with your hands.

  • Lipstick on Teeth | Giving and Receiving Admonishment

Nobody enjoys correction, but it's necessary for growth in Christ. Join Elizabeth Giles and Monika Walker as they consider how to give and receive admonishment/correction, in light of Psalm 141:5.

David doesn't want even a trace of wickedness to cling to him. He sees wickedness all around him, and his heart is deeply concerned that he not follow that path. He welcomes and even asks for admonishment so that his life may be righteous and holy. He recognizes that God's standard is holiness and that he falls far short of it. He says that admonishment is both a kindness and a source of healing for him.

We too should humble ourselves when admonished and take that correction to Scripture and wise counsel. Don't dismiss it too quickly before it has had the chance to do its work. Instead, humbly go before the Lord and allow admonishment to bring about the sanctification it was meant to produce.

When this is the day a friend tells you there's lipstick on your teeth, be thankful. A friend isn't telling you that to mock you, embarrass you, or hurt you. They genuinely want to see you grow in the faith, and you likewise should receive admonishment with a humble heart of thanksgiving.

  • Everyone Gets a Car | Hobby Lobby Signs

Why do some mistake the Word of God for a genie from a lamp? Well, those Hobby Lobby type signs certainly take some of the blame. When we take God's Word out of context, we create lies from the truth. Join Elizabeth Giles and Monika Walker for this episode where they look at the common misinterpretations of Psalm 37:4.
