This week’s deeply emotional episode centered on the loss of Jack’s mother and the long shadow of abuse and trauma cast by his father on both of their lives. In a season that will almost certainly end with the death of Rebecca surrounded by her loving family, Caroline and Paul examine the case of Marilyn. Thanks to the terror wrought by Stanley, she couldn’t have the same type of relationship with her children and grandchildren as Rebecca. But that doesn’t mean that she died sad and alone. As Jack Learned, she “built a new house” and found a new family.
